This afternoon, she was lying unconscious with a quart zip lock freezer bag on her head. I thought she was dead, she wasn't breathing and when I grabbed her she was limp. Don't know how long she was out - she must had a heck of a struggle as the dirt was torn up all over.
I started screaming at her - what a stupid reaction, she was dying, not deaf.... but thanks to Jen and all my vet tech experience that penetrated just enough that I knew there were things that I could do, I don't remember what I did, but she took a breath.
She took a few breaths and went limp again. But the 2nd time she started breathing and continued. She was soooo hot - I ran for my iphone and the refrigerator. I sat her on one of the shelves while calling Jen. The iphone is not a panic-friendly phone dialer - there are no keys to hang on to and I was shaking horribly.
Hemi's temp never went higher than 102.2 - which is incredible since she was lying in full sun while suffocating, and she is acting normally now - at first she had purple gums, then white, then she got up and was staggering.
So it really does happen - dogs can die from zip loc bags.... but to Hemi's credit, even tho she might have died, there was not a crumb left of the dog food in that bag.
Sort of puts agility in it's place.......
Wow... I don't even know what to say... so glad you found her.
ReplyDeleteMan Bev - that's just awful but thank goodness you have your vet tech experience to rely on to know what to do. I'm not sure my 1 or 2 canine emergency "classes" from years back would do much for me in a panic state. I'm so glad that things turned out the way they did. Give Hemi a pat for me - well knowing her she'd prefer a treat instead!
