Lagniappe

I lived in New Orleans for 5 years - in the era of Walmart-ised cities - it stands out as a very unique place. It has it's own dialect as well.  One of the words I learned from living there is lagniappe - there was even a newspaper published daily (not sure if it still is) called The Daily Lagniappe.

Google defines it as ....
dividend, something extra," 1849, from New Orleans creole, of unknown origin though much speculated. Originally a bit of something given by New Orleans shopkeepers to customers. Said to be from Amer.Sp. la ñapa  "the gift." Klein says this is in turn from Quechua yapa  "something added, gift."

Unprompted generosity.
For example,I lived in the French Quarter for several years without a kitchen.  So I ate breakfast and lunch mostly at the same restaurant daily.  For no reason and not always, they would feed me a meal, and add a dessert or some fruit that I hadn't ordered without charge.  That was lagniappe.

Poppy was awarded High In Trial Corgi at the Pembroke Specialty agility trial. That was on top of finishing both her novice std and jumpers titles and rocking her first Std open course. That would be called lagniappe if we still lived in New Orleans.

We had a very good day - dbl 'q' on all 3 dogs, Ben had an amazing jww run, Poppy 'q''d  in open and Rockit is now on his 19th dbl 'q'.
