I have 3 marvelous corgis, Ben, Fiesta, and Aidan. Ben found me in the brooksville spca where I was working to train dogs. Fiesta and Aidan came from St Louis corgi rescue. So I have never had a corgi puppy.
The argument can be made, that I have enough dogs and don't need a puppy corgi or otherwise, and I can't refute that. But who I am to turn down when the universe answers my prayers?
It started at the AKC invitational this year - Ben won his way into the finals but only by one knocked bar. The dog in 2nd place is named Hawkhills Tobi Bear and he is an awesome corgi. Tobi was also in the AKC National finals along with his daughter Winnie - how amazing is that?
Ben will be 9 this year and I have been noticing some knocked bars, and he actually fell off the dogwalk in class - never happened before. I don't know whether it's his age and structure, or whether it's the bugaboo DM that is showing up.
So the thought entered my head - maybe Tobi is siring some pups. But I could not find a way of contacting his owner, plus I really wanted a puppy that either clear or a carrier for DM so that I wouldn't have to spend the next 10 years paranoid of every mis-step.
I looked at a few litters and there was one I almost fell for, but it just didn't seem right. The day after I turned that litter down, I got an email from a complete stranger that said there was a litter born the day before sired by Tobi - 5 girls, 3 boys and she gave me the phone number for Derry Krause, the breeder of Gayheart corgis.
This was the litter I was looking for - beautiful pups and I loved talking to the breeder - she was patient and helpful. But there was still the dm thing. Derry agreed to have both the parents tested in response to my concerns - which I thought was really great. I decided, irregardless of the results of the dm test, I wanted one of those puppys and would take my chances. Derry called me on Monday - Tobi tested DM clear, the mother is at-risk, but that means that all the puppies will only carry one copy of the gene and will never manifest dm!!!! Score 2 for the universe.
So - I will get a beautiful puppy with awesome parentage and no dm risk - life is good!
I have a Gayheart/Tobi puppy that is now a year old, she is the sweetest corgi I have owned so far! You can see her on my website or youtube:

She is the only red/white corgi that I have so she is easy to spot : )
