Before any of this is written, I want to state for the record that Dr. B rocks - she and I have agreed to disagree about raw feeding until today. Any disagreement that we have is mitigated by the fact that she and I are trying to do the best we can for our dogs.
Ben has spent the day visiting Jen, he did not enjoy his visit. His bowel was impacted and after 3 enemas, and doubtless many rantings over the stupidity of people who feed their dogs raw meat, he was sedated and his bowels pulled out to remove the impaction.
I encountered the same disdain from Jen that is reserved for people who put their dogs on chains in the backyard and provide no shade.
Ben has no control over his dietary intake. I used my best judgement to sift thru available options to feed not just him, but all my dogs. I gave him a large-ish pork neck Sunday evening, not even worrying that it would cause a problem. All of my dogs were fed the same meal in similar proportions to size - even Hemi.
Ben indicated last nite before bed that he needed to go outside - not usual since we have a dog door, so I watched as he labored in vain - same story twice thru the night, and this morning I called my neighbor to take him to Jen. My other 8 dogs are fine.
I am ashamed that Dr B thinks that I harmed my dog with my choices, fear that she might be right, and sadness looking at Ben lying next to me shaking because he is a lot of pain.
I wonder what it's like to be a dog, and have to suffer the sometimes life threatening consequences of well intentioned people who control your entire life, I'll just bet Ben wishes he drew another straw at this moment.
Don't beat yourself up too badly :( maybe just smaller portion sizes in the future? or maybe a grinder?
ReplyDeleteNo matter what we do, we have to make choices that don't have 100% guarantees. I am so sorry that Ben had to go through that, and pray that he recovers quickly. You are not likely to believe this, but he WILL forgive you -- you need to do the same! Hugs to both.
ReplyDeleteAwww poor Ben - I hope he's feeling better now? Don't beat yourself up - it could have been anything. Flukes happen so to speak. Give Ben a hug from me!
